E55-Art Maxwell, YouScience, Podcast "Personalize Career-Connected Learning"

NewTech High Podcast
October 1, 2026

We had a truly splendid afternoon with Art Maxwell, Territory Manager from YouScience. YouScience is a career-connected learning platform that is anchored by BrightPath, their student-centered platform to do a number of inventories and tools that get you to know your students layer-by-layer better than we are doing before. Jerry Robicheau and the MRVED team of Misty Riebel and Dan Hovland joined us during this session. Maxwell is a burst of enthusiasm and certainly provides us with an incentive to look at products that seem to be next-generation for what our mission may become.

YouScience Podcast w/Art Maxwell

We are working to form a partnership for NewTech High schools very soon. Please stay tuned. Right now, there are several products in this category including Pathways to Careers, World Savvy, Headrush Learning and YouScience. Please contact me if you are thinking of adding these products or to participate in some of the pilot efforts we are joining in. In addition, I think BrightPath is the type of thing you could get local businesses and/or Chamber of Commerce to fund. This is what they are looking for! This is the type of connection to our curriculum we are looking for!

Four core pillars:
  • Aptitude Discovery — 14 online "brain games" (5–12 min each) measuring natural cognitive strengths; rooted in the validated Ball Inventory battery
  • College & Career Planning — through BrightPath, this program matches student aptitude profiles to 500+ career pathways and college majors
  • Precision Exams — catalog of 200+ CTE industry certifications for credential validation. We used Precision Exams as a standalone product when I was the Principal at Hutchinson.
  • Work-Based Learning — platform to manage internships, job shadowing, career fairs, employer time cards, and parent signatures.
Key differentiator: Unlike interest surveys (which reflect back what students input), aptitude discovery measures how the brain processes information, producing results students and educators describe as "scary accurate." 1 Core aptitude drivers stabilize around puberty and remain consistent through adulthood.

How the Aptitude Discovery Works (Ball Inventory)

  • Students play 9 games (+ 5 amplifiers = 14 total); 7th–8th graders start with 5 games 7
  • Results generate a color-coded aptitude profile with career battle cards showing salary ranges, projected job openings (O*NET), day-in-life tasks, employer listings, and related certifications 8
  • Interest inventory can be retaken annually as interests evolve; aptitude scores do not significantly change 69
  • Student profiles persist long-term — accessible even after graduation by updating personal email 10

Implementation Model: The 3S Framework

Art's recommended adoption sequence: 11
  1. Self — Educators/administrators take the assessment first to personally understand it
  2. Staff — Counselors, CTE teachers, and principals complete it to build shared vocabulary
  3. Student — Students are then onboarded with informed adult support
  • Dedicated Customer Success Manager (Stephanie Lester) supports onboarding from pilot through full deployment
  • Schools can deploy flexibly: single-day sessions, multi-week rollouts, or integrated with reverse career fairs and industry dinners

Funding & Community Partnership Model

  • Chamber of Commerce model: Greenwood County, SC — chamber funded uScience access and connected students to local employers and universities (Lander, Piedmont)
  • Minnesota precedent: The Minnesota Chamber of Commerce(MN) won national Chamber of the Year partly through uScience-funded grants
  • Employers can create free profiles on the platform to post listings visible to matched students
  • Patrick noted regional employers or workforce agencies (e.g., Luke Greiner, MN Dept. of Economic Development) could potentially fund district-wide access

Market Trends & Strategic Context

  • Shift toward career-connected learning is accelerating; U.S. Dept. of Education now aligned under Dept. of Workforce and Labor Services 20
  • Art's 10-year outlook: more industry partners embedded in schools, building community pipelines (e.g., Nissan partnership in Tennessee offering manufacturing-to-career tracks) 2122
  • uScience positioned as the only platform combining aptitude discovery + certification + work-based learning in one system 23

Open Questions & Pending Items

  • Jerry Robicheau raised transferability across communities and regional industry alignment — confirmed feasible via employer free listings and data-sharing agreements 2425
  • Misty asked whether taking the assessment in one sitting vs. broken sessions affects data quality — confirmed: results are consistent either way 9
  • Student data privacy: uScience follows protective protocols for minors; cross-school or university data sharing requires formal data-sharing agreements 25
